📚 “Literacy in secondary school must not simply be seen as a basket of general skills - it must be grounded in the specifics of each subject.”
This is according to our guidance on improving literacy in secondary schools.

Let’s talk about the facts.
Not conspiracies, not false myths spread on social media – facts.
Danielle Smith’s policy targeting trans and gender-diverse youth is an attack on a vulnerable group of youth and on thousands of Albertans. It is a massive overstep into private health care decisions. And it is an attack on the fundamental education rights of kids in our province.
But don’t take it from me: listen to the experts and allies in our video. Listen to the people with real, lived experiences.
Share this video and information with your friends and help combat the misinformation being spread by the Alberta government.
Sign our petition and tell Danielle Smith to stop pursuing these proposed changes.
Tell her that Albertans believe all human rights must be protected.

Happy I ❤️ to Read Month!
Now's the perfect time to finally dive into that book you bought months ago or make progress on your Goodreads shelf.
Let me know what’s on your reading list!
This moment from Friday reminds us:
✔️why school libraries matter
✔️why we must listen and respond to our students
✔️why we must curate our collections with intention and fund and allocate elementary school libraries
✔️why we must create safe spaces where students belong and matter
We found this student very carefully looking for a book to read. Every other student in her class had already found their books, but she was really taking her time. We asked if we could help her and then we came across this new graphic novel by @nathanfairbairn - we had just added it to our display of new books that morning. I asked if she wanted to try it - we knew she liked to read other graphic novels and this series looked appealing - it’s like Baby-Sitters Club for pets and she said yes.
And then she looked up at me and asked, “Is she Korean like me? She looks like me. Or maybe she’s from China. Do you know?” I told her that I didn’t know and then she said she would read it, and tell me when she found out.
As we were checking out, she asked me about our recent Podmoore: Voices at Bellmoore podcast, Episode 6 - Let’s Learn More About Lunar New Year. She said she wanted to be in this podcast, too. I explained that we had already recorded it with some other Bellmoore students who celebrate Lunar New Year and we could listen to it together with her class next week. I shared that we would also decorate our front display case for Lunar New Year on Monday and I asked her if she wanted to help. She looked up at me with the biggest smile and said, “yes please. I would love that.”
We hope she read this book before bed last night. We hope she found it to be so good that she couldn’t put it down. And we cannot wait to see her on Monday to find out if she liked it. And we cannot wait to find her to create our front display to celebrate Lunar New Year with our students - to share THEIR voices and hear from them, our student leaders and experts.
THESE moments here matter so much. When we talk about creating positive learning environments focused on well-being where EVERY student feels safe, and knows they belong - this is it right here. These quiet moments with this student who found a book to read in our school library learning commons and is excited to be part of an opportunity to celebrate her family’s traditions.
We both walked out of our LC with the BIGGEST smiles on our faces. ♥️♥️♥️
Shared with permission - in fact she asked if I would share this because “we need more books that look like me.” Yes, we do. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
