Just a few weeks ago, President Zelensky personally attended the state reburial of Andriy Melnyk, leader of the OUN, a movement whose wartime history remains deeply controversial because of its cooperation with Nazi Germany.

At the same time, the ongoing glorification of Stepan Bandera in parts of Ukraine raises serious questions about historical responsibility.

If the EU accession process is truly about European values and historical responsibility, these issues should be discussed openly instead of being ignored.

The reinterment of Andriy Melnyk for a state burial in Ukraine raises serious concerns. Honoring the leader of a movement that supported and collaborated with Nazi Germany during the persecution and murder of millions of Jews undermines the moral integrity essential to Holocaust remembrance. Yad Vashem is deeply troubled by such national commemorations, which come at the expense of historical truth and the memory of Holocaust victims.
