Irrigation from the Snake and Columbia Rivers has transformed thousands of acres of desert and sagebrush land into some of the most valuable, productive farmland in the Northwest, but that infrastructure currently depends on salmon-killing dams.

Greg Haller, of Pacific Rivers, responds: "It’s clear the irrigation community understands that the status quo isn’t working for salmon and I applaud their effort to break the gridlock with this proposal."

The River Democracy Act is an opportunity to protect the small headwater and seasonal, intermittent streams so important for Oregon's clean water supplies, watershed health, and fire and climate resilience.

Looking forward to hearing from rural Oregonians tomorrow at 1 pm PT (2 pm MT) about how my River Democracy Act strengthens drinking water protections & the recreation economy, reduces wildfire risks & protects existing property/grazing/irrigation rights https://t.co/GqbERhS7Bm
Greg Haller of Pacific Rivers: "Conservation groups have been advocating for ecosystem-based function as a new leg of the treaty, and I don't see anything in these amendments that points to that future."

Salmon have "kept us alive since the beginning of time, and now here they are helping us again, restoring an entire ecosystem because we’re using their good name to get our message out there.” Barry McCovey Jr., Yurok Fisheries Department Director. https://t.co/P8rEnwfS9p
@OregonGovBrown gets it: Restoring salmon and investing in the region's clean energy, irrigation, and transportation is a bipartisan opportunity for the future of the Columbia Basin.

We commend the Umpqua district fish biologist Greg Huchko for his leadership and for taking the necessary steps to protect these important fish when they need it most.
@ODFWConserve@MyODFW
The beautiful North Umpqua River has been closed to fishing due to low wild steelhead numbers, high water temperatures, and low flows.
Dam counts and snorkel surveys revealed that only 20 percent of steelhead have returned compared to recent averages.
