@Alonso_GD It’s really not insane. Stating that Jewish groups advocate for their own interests, and saying “Israel advocacy organizations have *unbelievable amounts of power over what even the United Kingdom has to say and do*.” are not the same thing at all.
@izakaminska Chinese welfarism might not be fair or comparable to the European system, but it exists in the form of soft credit, subsidised employment, affordable rents and administered energy prices.
@JoelMiller1980@markfrancisio@TonyWard867811 The population is ageing. The birth rate is below replacement, so on average we are getting older. You may be right on how to deal with the young, but the point is moot. The largest driver of *future* expenditure, without reform, will be increasing pension and healthcare costs
@markfrancisio@TonyWard867811 You’re right. The projection is driven by an ageing population (pension costs and healthcare) as well as an assumption about climate transition costs. The OBR is explicit about that.
@darioperkins Is there no scope to look through a war induced oil price shock? Nature of the energy squeeze still looks likely to be temporary even if lasts longer than we currently expect, but cyclical backdrop and policy stance is quite different to 2022….
You need to read this. Distressing, moving and important in equal measure
I have @Dannythefink's back - and anyone else whose Britishness is questioned by the extremists on here because of their faith or the colour of their skin

@BettsCaro@HJoyceGender@bindelj It’s extraordinary that despite all the court cases, and all the ample, helpful and free commentary available on this platform, that India still doesn’t have the most basic understanding of the equality act, nor the Forstater judgement.
@BarbaraRich_law I expect that in time, this Uncle of his will also have had the foresight and beneficence to have also rephrased it to “blessed be they/them”.
Gaia Vince @WanderingGaia makes a refreshing and powerful case for a more sensible and humane approach to migration. Well worth a listen.

Nigel Farage claimed last year to have “bought a house” in his constituency but the property is actually owned in the name of his partner, meaning he legally avoided higher-rate stamp duty on the purchase of an additional home – given he already owns other properties
@DAaronovitch I think we’re all aware of, and many would agree, with your point. But if you know of anti-Semitic bullying in regular schools, why would you choose to expose your children to that?
Our Sasha Rozansky reviews the NAO report on tackling violence against women and girls. The report finds that poor coordination across departments, underfunding, data gaps and a lack of evaluation are leaving survivors unprotected. https://t.co/EzACIMi0xb
