Complain about Darvish or whatever but the Padres' 2025 offense was:
• 18th in runs scored
• 28th in HR
• 22nd in SLG
Each of the last 5 World Series winners have been top-5 in HRs. The Padres were bottom 3.
Too much talent on the roster for the offense to be that bad.
Under the 3-game Wild Card series format, the Padres are the first road team to force a third game after losing Game 1.
Previous road Game 1 losers were 0-7 in Game 2.
Throughout 2025, the Padres...
-couldn't hit LHP (.690 OPS)
- didn't hit w/ RISP (23rd in MLB in RISP AVG)
- didn't hit for power (28th in HR, 22nd in SLG)
Not shocking that it didn't magically all change in their first playoff game.
Another tremendous start from Nick Pivetta:
6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K (109 P, 71 S)
Allowed a leadoff home run and nothing else — he's now gone at least 6 IP in seven consecutive starts
Mason Miller's pitches to the three batters he retired tonight (3 K's, all on 3 pitches)...
- slider, called strike
- slider, called strike
- slider, whiff
- slider, called strike
- 102 MPH whiff
- slider, whiff
- slider, called strike
- slider, called strike
- 103 MPH whiff
IN: Mason Miller, JP Sears, Freddy Fermin, OF Ryan O’Hearn, Ramon Laureano, INF Will Wagner, Nestor Cortes
OUT: Leo De Vries, Braden Nett, Ryan Bergert, Stephen Kolek, Brandon Lockridge, Boston Bateman, Victor Figueroa, Tyson Neighbors, among others
All major-leaguers stay.
Rough sledding right now for #Padres:
• 4-game losing streak with 3 total runs
• 2-6 record since the 21-0 game in Colorado
• 13-16 over last 19 games
• 25th in HR as a team, 16th in runs scored
Randy Vasquez's last three outings:
6 IP, 1 ER, 5 K
6 IP, 2 ER, 5 K
5 IP, 1 ER, 3 K
On the season, a 3.45 ERA in 44.1 IP — he's allowed two earned runs or fewer in 7 of his 9 starts.
When fully healthy, a lineup (more or less) of:
Tatis
Arraez
Machado
Merrill
Bogaerts
Jake
Sheets
Iglesias (?)
Díaz/Maldonado
... looks good. That said, a few injuries isn't an excuse to have 3-4 minor leaguers / auto-outs starting daily.
There has to be *some* plan B.
Short night in Detroit for Randy Vasquez, who had nothing working from the gates:
2.0 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 68 P
Logan Gillaspie relieved him with nobody out in the 3rd and gave up a two-out, two-run single — both of the runs were charged to Vasquez.
Padres pitching, last 11 home games: 0.90 ERA with 60 H & 104 K in 100.0 IP.
The starters over that span are averaging 6.2 IP/S with a 0.93 ERA. The bullpen's ERA in those games – 0.88.
Overall on the season in 13 home games, San Diego's pitching staff's 1.30 leads MLB.
Unlike previous starts, Shota Imanaga is having to work tonight in San Diego, but the Padres have nothing to show for so far.
3rd inning, bases loaded w/ 1 out — Machado K's, Bogaerts pops out
4th inning, runners on 2nd & 3rd w/ 1 out — Heyward & Maldonado both K.
Frustrating.
