Today, we honor the legacy of our ancestors who crossed oceans with dreams of a better life, carrying with them the heart and soul of Italy. Italian American Heritage Day is a celebration of their resilience, sacrifices, and the enduring spirit that continues to shape who we are. It’s about family, tradition, and the deep pride we feel for our roots. As we reflect on the past, we also celebrate the future, passing down these stories and values to the next generation. With love and gratitude, we proudly embrace our heritage all October long and always. 🇮🇹 #ItalianAmericanHeritage #OurStoryContinues
Happy Columbus Day!
While today’s holiday is meant to celebrate the anniversary of Christopher Columbus landing on San Salvador Island on October 12th, 1492, the actual event that fueled the celebration of Columbus Day in the US was a mass lynching of Italian Immigrants in 1891.
Following the murder of Police Chief David Hennessey in New Orleans, Louisiana, hundreds of Italians were arrested for suspicion of committing the crime before nineteen of them were charged. Although none of these men were convicted in a court of law, a mob of thousands decided their fate, forcefully entering the prison where they were being held and executing 11 of them.
This event brought the US and Italy to the brink of war. In order to quell the tensions that existed between the two countries and the growing anti-Italian sentiment that arose following this incident, President Benjamin Harrison declared the first Columbus Day in 1892, coinciding with the 400-year anniversary of Columbus’ voyage.
Italians were subject to intense discrimination and prejudice during this time and were the second most lynched ethnic group in the US. However, Columbus Day, as well as the monuments and parades that were established following its initial celebration, provided a symbol of the positive contributions that Italians have made to the United States. This helped Italians assimilate to their new way of life as Americans, allowing them to gain acceptance from the rest of the country in the process.
While there is lots of controversy surrounding Christopher Columbus, an objective and unbiased review of the historical record will reveal that many of the common transgressions he is accused of are either grossly exaggerated or outright ahistorical.
@ESPNCleveland We hear from players, AB, and Jim Schwartz himself about his “No-Seatbelt” defense.
Gotta play off that. Could even be as simple as “The No-Seat Belt D”
