This day (July 7) in 1942, as Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps raced through Egypt toward the Suez Canal — Nazi radio in Arabic openly called for the extermination of Jews across the region & the conquest of British Mandate Palestine.

“Kill the Jews before they kill you. Arabs of Syria, Iraq and Palestine, what are you still waiting for? The Jews are planning to rape your women, kill your children and destroy you. According to Islam, defending your lives is a duty that can only be fulfilled by destroying the Jews ... Your only hope of salvation lies in annihilating the Jews before they destroy you.”

This was official Nazi propaganda from Radio Zeesen. It reflected a deeper Nazi-Arab alliance that included the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husseini. After meeting Hitler in 1941, the Mufti received the rank of SS-Gruppenführer and a massive monthly stipend of 90,000 Reichsmarks (roughly $800,000 in today’s money). In return, he broadcast calls for Jewish extermination, recruited tens of thousands of Muslims for the Waffen-SS, and collaborated on Nazi operations in the Middle East.

A special SS killing unit (Einsatzkommando Egypt) was already standing by in Athens, ready to follow Rommel’s tanks and extend the Holocaust into North Africa and the Land of Israel.

The Nazis were stopped at El Alamein. But the eliminationist ideology — the conspiracy theories, the calls for total Jewish destruction — did not die with them. It has lived on in Arab politics and Islamist movements for decades.

Some hatreds have very long half-lives.
