What a boring planet we live on no unicorns no dragons no talking animals no secret portal to go into the other world only health insurance mortgage repayments
We have to pay to live in a house???
We have to pay to use water???
And we have to pay to go on holidays????

[SY @PARADABBY]

Yeah. Next month, let's plan the grocery budgettogether. If we can save money, great. But I don'twant to make your job harder just to prove a point."

That evening, our daughter came into the kitchen.
"Daddy, can we buy yogurt next week?"
My husband crouched down and smiled.
"Absolutely. And if it's on sale, we'll buy two!"

She cheered and ran off.
I laughed.

For the first time in a long while, I felt that my husbandtruly understood something I'd struggled to explain.

Running a household isn't about buying thecheapest food. It's about making every yencount while taking care of the people you love.

And sometimes, a single week is all it takes tolearn the value of work you've never noticed.❤️

My husband looked at our household budget and frowned.

"Honey, why are we spending so much on groceries?
We're only three people. Can't you manage with less?"
I stopped washing the dishes and looked at him.
"I see. You think I'm spending too much?"

"I'm just saying, we should buy cheaper things. It's not that difficult."

I wanted to argue, but instead, I smiled.
"Okay. Why don't you do the grocery shoppingnext week?"
He laughed.

"Easy! I'll show you how it's done."
I handed him the shopping list.

"Our budget is 16,000 yen for the week. That includesbreakfast, dinner, my lunchbox, and weekend lunches."
He waved his hand confidently.
"Don't worry. I'll save us thousands!"
On Monday, he returned from the supermarketlooking pleased with himself.

"Look! Only 6,000 yen! Chicken, pork, vegetables, eggs, and milk. I even bought the cheapest brands!"

I smiled and put everything away.

On Tuesday, he made dinner with chickenand cabbage.

"See? Delicious and cheap!"

On Wednesday, our daughter opened the refrigerator.

"Daddy, where's my yogurt?"

"We're saving money this week,

sweetheart. You can have some next week."

Her little face fell.

I said nothing.

On Thursday morning, we ran out of milk.

My husband rushed to the convenience storeand returned with a small carton.

"Why is everything so expensive there?" he muttered.

On Friday, he stood in front of the refrigeratorfor nearly ten minutes.

"What should I cook tonight?"
"Didn't you plan the meals?"

"I thought I'd figure it out as I went!"
That night, we ate the same cabbage-and-pork stir-fry we'd had twice already.
On Saturday, our daughter poked at her noodles.

"Daddy, are we having burnt noodles again?"

My husband looked embarrassed.

"They're not burnt. They're… extra crispy."

I had to hide my smile.

Finally, Sunday arrived.

My husband spread the receipts across the tableand punched the numbers into his calculator.

"15,420 yen! Under budget! I told you I could do it!"

He leaned back proudly.

"Honestly, you should learn from me. We couldsave a fortune if you shopped like this every week."

I looked at him for a moment.

Then I walked to the pantry and brought backa bag of rice.

"How much did this cost?"
He blinked.

"Well, we bought it last month."

"And the chicken you took out of the freezeron Friday?"

"That was from last month too."
I nodded.

"And the frozen salmon you used yesterday?I bought that on sale three weeks ago."

His smile slowly disappeared.
I placed our previous grocery receipts beside his.

"You stayed under budget this week becauseyou used food we'd already paid for. You alsoskipped some of the things we normally eat,and we had to make an extra trip for milk."

He stared at the receipts.

"I… hadn't thought about that."

"I'm not saying you did a bad job. I'm glad youtried. But when I shop, I'm not just buying food.I'm planning meals, checking sales, managingthe freezer, making sure our daughter has whatshe needs, and trying to avoid waste."

I paused before adding quietly,

"And I do all of that every single week."
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked up at me.

"I'm sorry. I thought it was just a matter of pickingthe cheapest things."
I smiled.

"Now you understand."
He gathered the receipts and studied them again.

After a while, he asked, "Can you teach mehow you plan everything?"

I was surprised.

"Really?"
