MD-PhD student @UWMedicine @uwepidemiology working on genomic epi of emerging infections with @trvrb | @Yale BS/MPH | 🏳️🌈 he/him/él | 🇨🇴 pa’lante, mi gente
Extremely honored and ecstatic to be named a 2024 #STATWunderkind ! Many thanks to @statnews for highlighting my work on using genomic epi and phylodynamics to understand mpox dynamics affecting queer communities around the globe. Read more here: https://t.co/Y5JfzlpVS4
Today @CAPublicHealth confirmed the first known case of clade I mpox in the United States related to the outbreak in Central and Eastern Africa. CDC is awaiting the specimen for confirmation testing, assisting our state and local partners to understand more about this case and prevent mpox spread in the United States. Deep mutational scanning of H5 #influenza by @bdadonai @jbloom_lab &co reveals how the >10,000 possible amino-acid mutations in #hemagglutinin affect cell entry, receptor preference, protein stability & neutralization by antibodies #H5N1#PLOSBiology https://t.co/C7Bdjkko0Z
I’m excited to see our paper posted @medrxivpreprint showing that older folks have higher levels of antibodies that recognize H5N1 viruses compared to younger individuals. Finally some good news for old people. 1/12 https://t.co/YZWLt98rgu
@EileenGalvez@LaCasadeYale@Yale So so many congrats on your new step! I’m sure you’ll be very missed at La Casa but so exciting to see the work you do and will now have the time and space to dedicate to.
The Oropouche virus expansion in Brazil was a concerning case of arbovirus emergence outside of its endemic range, and so many questions remained!
We aimed to answer some of them by integrating landscape phylogeography and ecological niche modelling!

Wow. The human isolate of the Texas cattle H5N1 is way more transmissible by aerosols in ferrets than the bovine isolates tested so far.
Another warning that we shouldn’t assume that H5N1 in people is always going to be mild & limited to conjunctivitis.

Yale has renewed its Scholars At Risk program for 2025.
If you’re a PhD scientist facing violence or persecution in your home community, you can get a funded position to work at @Yale or @YaleMed for up to two years.
Nominations due Dec 1.

Trump has talked about immigrants having "bad genes" or "poisoning the blood of the country"
to experts we talked to, it sounded like 1920s eugenicists
we wrote abt the history — but also the ways academia has unintentionally upheld ideas abt biological differences btwn groups
We are recruiting up to 5 Pandemic Sciences Research Fellows at @UniofOxford. Posts are for recent graduates to carry out independent research on topics in one or more of the following areas: AI & Epi, Genomics, Climate & Infectious diseases, Global health digital data science ↓

Given the complex interactions between climate change, env. modification, urban growth &human mobility, lack of effective surveillance will continue to facilitate the (re-)emergence of pathogens with potential epidemic capacity
APOBEC3 deaminase editing supports human-to-human transmission in escalating Mpox outbreaks of both Clade Ia and Ib in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, July-September 2024.

Thinking about doing a postdoc? Wondering what we do all day?? @chris_zie @sofiavanmoorsel and I tracked over 19 months (!) of work & compared it to our junior postdoc data from 6 yrs ago - check out our article! #AcademicChatter#AcademicTwitter#phdchat https://t.co/1kkI43ost3
Excited this paper is out in @Nature on the global genomic surveillance of #monkeypox virus.
Honored to have the opportunity to work on this and huge thanks to everyone for their efforts
Our analysis reveals
- high mobility of clade I viruses within Central Africa
- sustained human-to-human transmission of clade IIb lineage A viruses within the Eastern Mediterranean region
- distinct mutational signatures that can distinguish sustained human-to-human from animal-to-animal transmission.
- distinct clade I sequences from Sudan suggest local MPXV circulation in areas of Eastern Africa over the past four decades.

Take a look at my essay for Nature Reviews Genetics! It's pretty cool but behind a paywall :-(
Let me know if you'd like a copy.
