Back on stage, running my favorite session: Guess the Winner 🏆
This time at @AppGrowthSummit Barcelona 🇪🇸 last week. Real paywall experiments from @Superwall customers, and the audience had to guess which variant won.
Huge thanks to the customers who let me share their tests. No data, no game 🙏

@adriamatz Yes, I am also witnessing that Apple has recently become a lot more strict about that 3.1.2(c) guideline.
Thanks @adriamatz - happy you liked my session! 🙌
As @nickgdwn said, the “Design your trial” layout/tactic has been approved countless times.
Saying that, I agree that this particular example is a bit unfortunate as it promotes the “Free” way too much. The trial lenght should be at the first line.
I should have flagged that during my presentation.
Although it definetely plays a role in the impact/results, the more compliant “Design your trial” paywalls also tend to win in similar experiments.
Thanks for bringing it up! 🙌
Everyone assumes higher price = lower renewal. I've checked thousands of iOS subscriptions to see if that's actually true. 👀
A few things that stood out:
- $6.99/week renews noticeably better than $7.99, even though they're a dollar apart. And more surprisingly also a lot better than both $4.99 and $5.99
- On monthly plans, cheaper really does mean stickier, that's the one place the "obvious" rule actually held
- In yearly plans, several neighbouring prices land on a very similar Year 1 renewal rate, so bumping the price doesn't always mean losing renewal.

Cheaper subscription plans renew better.
But per subscriber, do they earn more? 👀
I pulled renewal data for thousands of Android subs on @Superwall. Weekly, monthly and yearly plans, US and EU.
Then I calculated revenue per 100 paying subscribers for every price.
What I found:
👉 Weekly: $6.99 is the best price on Android. On iOS it was only the runner-up. The cheapest, $2.99, lands mid-pack.
👉 Monthly: $1.99 keeps 5x more subscribers than $9.99 after a year. But per subscriber, $14.99 earns 3x more than $1.99 in Year 1.
👉 Yearly: every step up the price ladder earned more per subscriber. $89.99 renews worst and still brings in the most after the first renewal.
The catch: this is per paying subscriber, not per paywall visitor. Higher prices usually convert fewer people.
So don't pick your price from a chart. Test it.
