Well dear friends. Transport department is seeking to onboard youngsters for creating awareness about Road Safety and also to achieve the target of reduction in Road accidents and deaths. The onboarding will be on voluntary basis and once the group is formed the tasks shall be assigned district wise. There shall only be appreciation and no other perks. Target: Making JK Roads Accident free. Volunteers can register with the respective RTO/ ARTO office wef 8 of June till 30 of June.

KUNCHOUTH – A Sacred Festival of Jammu’s Hilly Regions, Not Kashmir

Kunchouth is a traditional and historical women-centric festival celebrated with great zeal and religious fervour across the Jammu region, particularly by Saraji, Bhadarwahi and other Hindu communities of Bhadrakashi (Bhadarwah), Saraj, Dessa, Pogal, Thathri, Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, and also in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.

❗ Important clarification:
Kunchouth is not a Kashmiri festival. It belongs to the distinct cultural heritage of Jammu’s hilly belt, celebrated by Saraji and Bhadarwahi-speaking communities and other Hindus of these regions.

About the Festival

Celebrated during Shukla Paksha of Magh month (January–February), Kunchouth is similar in spirit to Karva Chauth but differs in season, rituals, and timing:
•Kunchouth is observed in winter, while Karva Chauth is in summer
•The fast is broken after Gauri Pooja during the day, not after moonrise
•Women pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands

Women dress in colorful traditional attire and ornaments, gather near natural water sources (chashma), perform Gauri Pooja, sing traditional “Gouri” songs, and dance together.

Three Days of Celebration

Though the fast is for one day, festivities continue for three days:
•Women visit neighboring houses, offering respect to all—beyond caste, creed, age, or gender
•They receive blessings of “Suhaagan Bho” (May your husband live long)
•Meals are shared in every home visited
•Traditionally, husbands manage the kitchen during these days

On snow-covered hills, when women walk village to village in vibrant attire, the scene feels like fairies descending upon the earth.

In recent years, many husbands now also observe the fast, reflecting evolving mutual respect and partnership.

Let us celebrate and preserve this unique cultural identity of Jammu’s hilly regions, and ensure it is rightly recognized and not misrepresented.
