Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender explain how they ended up playing aliens in "Hope," the craziest movie at #Cannes so far:
"The dream is to be able to work with an auteur. And director Na is an auteur who makes incredible cinema," Vikander says.
"Alicia told me to do it," Fassbender jokes before adding: "He’s mixing genres... That feeling of the unexpected can be very rare in cinema, and I think he’s a master at that."

lgh: pick one main character from one of your films that you'd apologise to?
pcw: when writing the jsa script, i kept wondering if sergeant lee soohyeok truly had no choice but to end his own life. i kept thinking about that a lot from the very beginning of the script and even now, those thoughts often come back to me. i've tried writing alternate endings but i keep questioning whether that choice was the right one and sometimes i regret it but other times, i nod and think that there was no other way.
back then, there was a cool gentleman called baek giwan who watched the film who said: 'that wasn't suicide. he wasn't the one who caused his own death. it was the division system itself that killed him.' for me personally, i approached it more broadly, seeing it as clash not just with the division, but between the system and the individual. that's the perspective from which i made the film. when i think about it that way, i can understand it too.
park chan-wook's most repeatedly watched films that he loves:
- vertigo (1958)
- the exorcist (1973)
- don't look now (1973)
- the wicker man (1973)
also films by:
- mikio naruse
- yasujirō ozu
- kim ki-young
- lee doo-yong
- hah myung-joong
Park Chan-wook says that even if there’s only 22 films in competition at Cannes, the number of people that made these movies would be in the thousands, and if you count their families then it increases to tens of thousands so he promises to judge thoughtfully as jury president.
