Not exaggerating when I say the future depends on this catching on en masse. Kids, adults. Book clubs, silent reading groups. For the past twenty-five years tech has corroded our attention, intelligence and basic pleasure in living, and books are the key to winning them back.
‘Schools should teach students responsible phone use!’
Yeah buddy we’ve been trying for two decades, but corporations have made devices more addictive and parents have failed to teach their kids responsible use, so yet another societal issue is a school problem. So here we are.
I’m probably in the minority but I think children should grow up without screens, should have leisure to experience boredom, so that they’re driven to play with others, driven to read, driven to cultivate passions & personality. Kids function best when they’re raised screenless.
One of the strongest arguments for teaching classic literature is simply this:
If students are never asked to inhabit minds from other times and cultures, they will confuse their own narrow historical moment with universal truth.
The canon is an antidote to chronological snobbery.
For children, yes.
Like I am a fan of controlling their use of alcohol, cigarettes, even paracetamol.
No sex or porn either.
Depending on age, they should not cross the road unsupervised.
It is obvious same applies to the internet.
If you want to raise functional children, you need to limit their screentime, you need to read to them, you need to give them a childhood free of endless entertainment and digital distractions. Your children deserve to grow up in this physical world.
A growing number of four- and five-year-olds lack the ability to hold a pencil or even recognize their own names. We haven’t yet begun to grapple with the damage that raising toddlers on iPads inflicted on a generation of children.
Social media is harming our children. Far too little is being done to protect them from violent and sexual content online.
That’s why I’m announcing the next Conservative government will raise the age of consent for social media to support parents.
what do you mean next week I have to go back to working 40+ hours instead of reading whole books and going to movies in the middle of the day and getting drunk on my couch. haha what do you mean
“Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.
