For Democrat Scott Colom, his quest to win a US Senate seat in Mississippi is a long shot but not a lost cause.

The 43-year-old local district attorney is hoping to topple Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in a deep-red state that hasn't sent a Democrat to the chamber in nearly four decades or elected a Black candidate in a statewide race since the Reconstruction era. President Donald Trump won the state two years ago by 23 points. https://t.co/EjA545KaTX

Mississippi's attorney general says a Senatobia police officer was justified in the June shooting death of a 1-year-old boy while responding to a shoplifting call. The conclusion of the state's investigation follows months of mourning and calls for justice. https://t.co/w0EjanvgzL

[Barack Obama @BarackObama]

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically.

Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country.

Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case.

Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve.

In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota.

The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.

Why do people stay in credit card debt?

- No consequences. In my experience, the vast majority of people in credit card debt don’t experience serious consequences. They still have Netflix, they still eat out, they still buy random stuff from Amazon. Sure, they’re paying thousands in interest, but to them…so what? Out of sight, out of mind
- It’s what they know. They grew up seeing parents & friends be CC debt and, though they complained about it, there aren’t any real consequences that they saw
- They’re disengaged from money. This is most Americans. They might “play” money manager by tracking a random expense or logging into their BofA app, but they don’t know how money really works nor do they care
- Inability to say no. 100% of the people I’ve spoken to in CC debt struggle to say no to their children. This skill of setting boundaries seeps into their finances, parenting, and many other parts of their lives
- They do not connect cause and effect. In general, Americans have a poor understanding of cause and effect. They eat unhealthily and wonder why they have mobility issues in their 30s. They buy an $80,000 truck and wonder why money feels tight. They vote for Republicans — even farmers whose livelihood depends on specific policies — and complain about the price of gas and groceries and equipment
- It is very hard to constantly fight against a system designed to put you into debt and keep you there. Though people in CC debt often make poor decisions, our culture is actively designed to encourage debt. Our neighborhoods are car dependent (a policy decision), housing is historically expensive (a policy decision), our healthcare is expensive and inferior to our peers (a policy decision), we have massive deregulation for financial oversight (a policy decision) and more. We can simultaneously acknowledge the need for systemic change and take personal responsibility

Those are some of the reasons people stay in credit card debt
