• Backing Eovaldi, who has covered this line in 10 of 13 starts this season with 6+ Ks in 6 of his last 7 starts. We think he’s primed to do it again.

• He gets the Red Sox, who don’t look like a great matchup on paper, but if you look deeper, they still have 6 bats holding a K% above 17% vs RHP. There should be plenty of targets for Eovaldi to find 5+.

• Boston doesn’t see his pitch mix well either, with sub-.230 batting averages vs his top 3 usage pitches along with quality whiff rates. Eovaldi’s K metrics are solid, led by an ELITE 93rd percentile Chase% and 83rd percentile Whiff%. That should play well against a Red Sox lineup with some high-whiff bats throughout.

• This is the same lineup that Drew Rasmussen just cooked for 13 Ks, and before that, Shane Baz put up 6 Ks against them. Baz holds K metrics below the 51st percentile and has a 27th percentile K%, which gives us full confidence that Eovaldi can put up similar numbers, if not better, in this one.

• Overall, this is a solid spot and the juice should be worth drinking. Eovaldi recorded 7+ Ks vs Boston last year, even though they do have a different lineup. With a juiced 17.5 outs line, 1 K per inning feels doable here. Give us the over!

• This is a spot where the matchup + environment both lean heavily against Meyer, and the number just feels a bit too low given his profile.

• Dating back to last season, Meyer has gone over this line in 15 of his last 20 outings, which tells you everything about the type of pitcher he’s been. Electric stuff at times, but extremely hittable when he loses command or falls behind. He tends to give up damage in bunches rather than settling in, which is exactly what you don’t want against a lineup like this.

• Now he heads into Yankee Stadium, one of the more hitter friendly parks in baseball, especially for power. Short porch, strong lineup, and a team that doesn’t chase much. The New York Yankees are built to capitalize on mistakes, and more importantly, they’re patient. That patience forces pitch counts up, creates traffic on the bases, and puts pressure on a pitcher like Meyer who already struggles with run prevention.

• Eury Pérez is viewed as the higher upside arm, and even he got tagged for 4 earned in this matchup. If a more polished and dominant arm is having issues keeping this lineup quiet, it’s hard to project Meyer suddenly bucking that trend.

• His first start this season doesn’t inspire confidence either, giving up 3 earned to a weak Colorado Rockies lineup is a red flag. If he’s already allowing that level of damage against a bottom tier offense, the jump in competition here is significant.

• Then you add in batter familiarity. Cody Bellinger has had success against him (.600 AVG, small sample), and while you don’t overreact to small samples, it reinforces the idea that Meyer isn’t particularly deceptive or difficult to square up when hitters see him well.

• At the end of the day, this comes down to:
Proven trend of allowing 3+ ER consistently
Elite, patient, power heavy opponent
Hitter friendly ballpark
Weak early season form

• You’re not asking for a blow up, just 3 earned runs. Against this offense, that’s a very reachable number.
