I built https://t.co/UOrBMZNSvx because I was doomscrolling social media before I got out of bed
every morning
for years
nothing worked. screen time limits, app timers, willpower
so I built something that locks my apps until I walk
now I'm building it in public. the wins, the failures, the numbers
if that sounds interesting, follow along :)

@jbillinson brick is awesome. it didn’t work for me bc i’d tap it when the urge hit (or i needed my phone for real stuff).
i built https://t.co/14oznhYR4m instead: it blocks distracting apps i pick until i hit my daily step goal, so i still have a phone, i just can’t doomscroll

An app that locks socials until you hit your step goals...
Instant download. Just waiting for @nicholasnlawton to order my walking pad 🚶♀️
(@pat_caz I can already tell brb would crush it on SideShift)
5/ i understood all of this
and still couldn't stop doomscrolling
turns out understanding the mechanism doesn't protect you from it
removing the option does
that's why i built https://t.co/14oznhYR4m
move more, scroll less.
4/ commitment devices work because they remove the decision entirely
when your apps are locked and walking is the only key
your brain stops fighting and starts walking
after a week, you stop thinking about it
most people try to use their phone less
by trying to want it less
that's not how desire works
you don't reduce desire by willpower
you reduce it by adding cost
cost = walk
i tracked how many times i reached for my phone in one hour
before brb: 14 times
after brb: 3 times
i wasn't doing anything differently
the apps were just locked
the reaching just stopped
