-You care about the patient population
-You have expertise that you would like to focus on
-It is hard to go back to training after being an attending
-You want to do academics

There is an opportunity cost for doing fellowship but do what you love if you can

Are we talking turkey… hematology?
- Unlike humans, turkey RBCs are nucleated
- Heterophils (neutrophils for birds) tend to increase as a stress response – otherwise lymphocytes rule the differential roost
- The PT for turkeys is prolonged relative to human (around 17 sec)
- Turkey RBC have been used as reagents for tetanus immunity as well as other applications in the lab
- The smear shows a WBC infected by the parasite Leucocytozoon smithi – birds get different leukotropic diseases than us!
