DETAILED NEWS:
ATTEMPTED POACHING OF TVK MLAs' EXPOSED --
THREE ARRESTED FOR THE BID TO BRIBE TVK UTHANGARAI MLA N ILAIYARAJA;
OFFERED ₹35 CRORE TO SHIFT HIS ALLEGIANCE
ROLE OF EX-MINISTER V SENTHIL BALAJI & HIS BROTHER V ASHOK KUMAR REVEALED
Chennai city police arrested three persons for allegedly offering ₹35 crore to Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA N. Ilaiyaraja, who represents the Uthangarai Assembly constituency in Krishnagiri district, to vote in a particular manner during a proposed motion against the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
In his complaint, Ilaiyaraja stated that he and his family were threatened after he rejected the offer. The arrested were identified as Thirunavukkarasu of Arumbakkam, Naresh of Tiruchi and Thiagarajan of Medavakkam.
While the DMK and AIADMK have accused the TVK of attempting to poach their legislators to strengthen its position in the Assembly, the arrest of the three suspects exposed an alleged attempt to poach TVK MLAs on behalf of a former minister and his brother.
In an official release, the Chennai city police stated that one of the arrested accused told investigators that he acted on the instructions of former Tamil Nadu minister V. Senthil Balaji and his brother V. Ashok Kumar.
According to police, Ilaiyaraja received a phone call from Thirunavukkarasu a few days before lodging the complaint. The caller introduced himself as a representative of an opinion polling firm, Indian Political Democratic Strategies (IPDS), and claimed that he wished to arrange a meeting on behalf of members of a major political party. Ilaiyaraja declined the request, citing prior commitments.
Police said Thirunavukkarasu contacted the MLA again and allegedly offered him up to ₹35 crore to vote in a specified manner during the proposed motion against the Speaker. Ilaiyaraja rejected the offer and instructed the caller not to contact him again. The caller then allegedly threatened the MLA and his family with consequences if he disclosed the conversation.
Following the incident, Ilaiyaraja approached Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj and lodged a formal complaint on Monday. The petition was forwarded to Triplicane Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Jayachandran for investigation.
A police team tracked and arrested Thirunavukkarasu. Based on information obtained during interrogation, a team led by Inspector of Police Karunakaran arrested Naresh in Tiruchi, while another team arrested Thiagarajan in Medavakkam.
Police said the investigation revealed that V. Ashok Kumar, brother of former Tamil Nadu minister and Coimbatore South MLA V. Senthil Balaji, met accused Naresh at a location in Chennai. Investigators further stated that Thirunavukkarasu contacted the complainant on the instructions of V. Senthil Balaji and V. Ashok Kumar.
Meanwhile, police detained four more suspects in connection with the alleged attempt to poach the TVK MLA. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the group approached a few legislators and planned to target at least 15 TVK MLAs to persuade them to shift their allegiance.
TVK office-bearers also approached the Election Commission of India, alleging a large-scale attempt to poach the party’s MLAs to topple the State govt.
Police said further investigation was under way to ascertain the full extent of the alleged conspiracy and identify the involvement of other persons in the case.
