Yaroslav Shynkarenko, known by the call sign “Yaryk,” joined the army at the age of 18, following the example of his uncle and stepfather.

During four years of service, Yaroslav rose from private to sergeant and eventually became the senior sergeant of a reconnaissance company in the 131st Independent Reconnaissance Battalion.

By the age of 22, he had achieved everything through his own efforts. As his mother, Olena, recalls, while his peers were enjoying their youth, Yaroslav knew only the front line.

He took part in the battles for Avdiivka, the Avdiivka industrial zone, and fought in Pisky near Donetsk Airport.

On March 10, 2020, in Pisky, an incident occurred that earned him the Silver Order of the “People’s Hero of Ukraine.”

That day, Yaroslav was driving along a route considered safe, although one section was clearly visible to the enemy.

Because of engine problems, they departed slightly later than planned. When he spotted a missile heading directly toward them, Yaroslav instinctively turned the steering wheel, saving himself, his commander, and another soldier.

The missile struck the truck behind them instead. The first missile disabled the vehicle, and the second was used to finish off those who survived. Some of the wounded suffered devastating injuries.

A few days later, his commander told him he had been nominated for the Order for Courage. However, he never received that state award.

Later, he was presented with the medal “For Military Service to Ukraine.”

In July 2021, his contract ended, and his mother persuaded him to leave the military and take a break.

But on February 24, 2022, at 8 a.m., he was already standing outside the enlistment office.

He was assigned to the reconnaissance company of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians, serving as a reconnaissance squad leader.

Near the village of Ploske, his group became surrounded. Yaroslav was the only one with combat experience. Taking responsibility, he led the men for 13 kilometers under heavy Grad rocket fire.

When they were almost clear, the battalion commander asked him to go back and rescue another group.

Without hesitation, Yaroslav agreed.

He successfully led 16 soldiers to safety.

After Russian forces withdrew from the Kyiv region, Yaroslav operated near Ivankiv, closer to the Belarusian border.

On April 19, he was conducting a combat patrol in a vehicle. There were four men in the group, and Yaroslav was driving.

The vehicle struck an anti-tank mine.

The explosion occurred directly beneath the driver’s wheel. Yaroslav absorbed the full force of the blast.

He was killed instantly.

No one else in the group was injured.

His mother learned of his death the following day from his brother. To this day, she says she has never fully come to terms with the loss.

Today, Olena Kukla has founded a charitable foundation in her son’s name and volunteers to help military units in need.

She buried Yaroslav beside her husband. In her home stands a memorial wall displaying portraits of all family members who went through this war, dressed in military uniform.

A teacher found guilty of murdering baby he was adopting with partner, who was found guilty of allowing his death.

37-year-old Jamie Varley was also found guilty of seriously assaulting Preston Davey on an earlier occasion, as well as four counts of child cruelty and possessing and distributing indecent images of a child. All those offences related to baby Preston.

His partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was found guilty of causing or allowing a child’s death, two child cruelty offences and a single sexual assault.

They should be put to death, no other sentence is adequate, revolting!!
