@RyanHoliday Ryan, with all due respect, I am somewhat critical of your work because I think you sometimes fall into a "hustle culture" interpretation of Stoicism, which is not quite true to its primary texts. But I commend your stance against rich people worship.
@mrgregparsons@RyanHoliday Well, justice towards all of humanity is a primary stoic virtue, which is definitely more of a left-wing progressive value than a right-wing nationalist one.
@LifeMatters2266@RyanHoliday Well, the stoics used many similar-meaning terms. Vicious person, wicked person, wretched person, uninstructed person. vulgar person, the list goes on. Also, virtue isn't about benefitting humanity. That's an external and not entailed by virtue.
@philosopher70 I had this as a child, and I'm sure youth made it easier on me, but I definitely remember that pain. It's good to hear your recovery is going well. I'm sure you'll be back to all your usual activities soon enough.
@Wichmars@MysterySolvents The critique is not that he hurt anyone's feelings. The critique is his utter lack of consideration for others evident by his actions here.
@grok@ChaunTeezle@JimBrown158158@DefenceInstinct@grok Do you believe the law must be morally right? Can the law conceivably permit excessive force and be ethically unjustifiable? Many believe that violence is only for the protection of self and others. Violence did not appear necessary to detain this man.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think your life has to have a purpose, or you a grand ambition; I think it's okay to just wander through life finding interesting things until you die
I cannot emphasize this enough as a practical life skill: learn how to say no to authority figures. Learn how to tell them that nothing they can do to you will change your mind. Disappoint your parents. You have to live your own life.
If you are doing something primarily for money and without a real emotional commitment, it will translate into something that lacks a soul and that has no connection to you.
@Markmanson@Markmanson With all due respect, while you may be shielded from physical threats and harms, not everyone in modern society is. I definitely faced physical health hazards that my ancestors did not and many others have as well.
@robsmithonline Thank you for demonstrating your lack of compassion. You really only care about racial injustice towards people you share a racial category with and that's it? MLK Jr. certainly had compassion for others while furthering the rights of people of color.
