One of the big areas I disagree with Prof. Wangari (a vet posing as an environment expert at Greenbelt) is her notion that forests must be left virgin. She planted this idea on Kenyans, pushing the belief that fencing forests is the only way to protect them. I believe instead that forests should be managed for sustainable use — for shamba systems, firewood, picnics, walking, hunting, beekeeping, and even cattle grazing during drought seasons. To me, fencing off forests as if they were museums is not only impractical, it’s misguided.
