For years, Jennifer Pan convinced her strict parents she was studying to become a pharmacist, even though she had never graduated from high school.
When her lies were exposed, she plotted a deadly attack on them.
Jennifer grew up with extremely controlling parents. They monitored her schedule, banned dating in high school and expected her to excel at everything.
When she couldn't keep up, she started lying. She forged report cards, faked a university acceptance and spent years pretending to attend the University of Toronto.
When her parents finally discovered the truth, they banned her from seeing her boyfriend. With his help, Jennifer hired a hitman.
On the night of November 8, 2010, she left the front door of the family home in Ontario, Canada, unlocked. Three armed men walked in, tied her to the upstairs banister with a shoelace and dragged her parents into the basement.
They covered their heads with blankets and opened fire. Her mother was shot in the head and died instantly. Her father was shot in the face but miraculously survived.
Jennifer called 911 and told police it was a robbery. But she said her hands had been tied behind her back, and investigators couldn't understand how she had made the call.
Then her father woke from a coma and told police he had seen his daughter talking calmly with one of the gunmen, like a friend.
In 2015, she was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
Years later, her murder conviction was overturned. In March 2026, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter in her mother's death, while her conviction for trying to kill her father stayed in place.
She received another life sentence. But this time, she was immediately eligible for parole.
