Teesside has long experience of being talked down. The place once stood for steel, iron, coal — industry. Over 40 years that status has disappeared with the industries themselves. Teesside instead saw itself as half-forgotten by government, then the butt of jokes and disparaging coverage. Recent events have only reinforced an impression of a beaten, wild area.
But as a name with national recognition, what has endured is Middlesbrough FC. There was a palpable sense on Saturday that, but for Boro’s late winner against Norwich, the mood across the region would have plummeted. It can sound overblown, but what you saw with Ashley Phillips’ 91st-minute winner was just how much Teesside hope, self-esteem and identity are invested in the football club.
There are no claims that football means more on Teesside, just that, as @mwalker2771 writes, at a time like this its presence is enhanced.

@StoriesOfSmoke Well-written - an LBO financed (in part?) using what seems to be a dividend recap. MSD, as you know I’m sure, finances various clubs on an asset-backed basis - not cheaply, but not unusual. (MSD is Michael Dell’s family office, now called DFO, but often still referred to as MSD)
Will Lankshear's brace today means that this is the 2nd fastest Boro have had a player reach 3 competitive goals for the season in the last 30 years. #Boro ❤️🤍
@untypicalboro Arfsten and Berhalter clearly loved it judging from the post-match interview - I’m fine with it. Seems perfectly acceptable to support *our* Americans in this way, I think most people realise that it doesn’t make us a MAGA rally
🇺🇸 At Middlesbrough, Max Arfsten will join:
- Aidan Morris (former Columbus Crew teammate, joined 2024)
- Sebastian Berhalter (former Vancouver Whitecaps, Crew academy midfielder, joined this week)
- Adilson Malanda (former Charlotte FC CB, joined in Jan.)
- Riley McGree (technically former Charlotte FC midfielder though he never made an app in MLS)
People ask why England always hosts the final of the World Test Championship. This is not actually shameless bias on the part of the ICC. Rather, it is because they need a guaranteed neutral venue.
@TacticallyMatt You’ve done well, he’s done well, and it had to happen, it’s the way of the world. I really hope it works out for him and you - and if not, feel free to loan him back! #utb
