Skin Disease Cases Surge Among IDPs in Rathedaung Township

AB News – December 2, 2025
Julyin

A rising outbreak of skin infections has been reported among internally displaced civilians sheltering at the Moesae Island IDP camp in Rathedaung Township, according to residents.

Since November, more than 1,000 displaced people have been taking refuge at the camp, and skin disease cases — particularly among children — have sharply increased, local sources told AB News.

One displaced resident said:

“Rashes and skin ulcers have returned again. It’s mostly because of poor hygiene — dirty water, overcrowding, and lack of sanitation. When one person becomes infected, it spreads very fast. Children are the most affected.”

The Moesae camp faced a similar outbreak during this year’s rainy season but was successfully contained after timely intervention by the Arakan People’s Health Department (APHD).

Hygiene and Medicine Shortages

A female IDP told AB News that overcrowding and shortages of medical supplies are making the situation worse:

“We live day to day. We don’t have stable jobs anymore. What we earn in one day is barely enough for food the next day. If someone gets sick, medicine costs are too expensive. It’s very difficult.”

Across Rakhine State, displaced communities have long faced shortages of food, healthcare support, and financial resources, forcing many to go without treatment.

History of Widespread Outbreaks

Since last year, skin disease outbreaks have been recorded in multiple townships, including:

Sittwe

Pauktaw

Ramree

Kyaukphyu

Minbya

Thandwe

Gwa

Taungup

Ann

Emergency treatment operations were carried out by the Arakan People’s Health Department at various locations, but recurring displacement and overcrowding continue to fuel new infections.

Displacement Crisis

According to the HDCO bulletin dated December 29, the ongoing conflict between the Arakan Army (AA) and junta forces — which began on November 13, 2023 — has displaced over 600,000 people across Rakhine State.

Many IDPs are now living in temporary shelters with limited access to clean water, sanitation, and healthcare, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases, skin infections, and respiratory illnesses.

The destabilising role played by ARSA (and the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation) was totally ignored at the recent UNGA High-Level Conference, though it is perhaps the most serious component of the present Rakhine crisis. But then the Conference did not seriously get to grips with anything, nor invite any experts to address them.

Initially known as Harakah al-Yakin (or the Faith Movement), ARSA had by 2016 penetrated most Rohingya townships and, according to the International Crisis Group (see attached extract from an ICG analysis), had trained hundreds of villagers, killed several informers and paid considerable amounts of hush-money. The military crackdown after the 25 August 2017 ARSA attack was both brutal and out of all proportion, but it may well have necessitated clearance operations in most Rohingya townships.

Dr Yunus should of course have been asked at the Conference to explain why he allows ARSA and other militant Rohingya groups to operate in the refugee camps and to launch raids into Rakhine State. Like the Bangladesh Foreign Minister when asked the same question in 1992, Dr Yunus would only have sighed, perhaps even more mournfully than the Foreign Minister in 1992, maybe rolled his eyes as well and shaken his head in despairing impotence, adding that he is after all only a Senior Adviser to the Bangladesh Government and that he cannot tell them what to do.

Lucky Karim delivered a stark assessment of the conditions facing the #Rohingya community in #Bangladesh's camps during her address at the UN High-Level Conference.

While expressing gratitude to Bangladesh for providing refuge, she detailed the immense suffering. She noted that refugees have "suffered deeply in the dangerous and overcrowded camps" because of restrictions. She emphasised the devastating impact on the youth: "lost generations of Rohingya people, just like myself, have had zero formal education in the last eight years." Furthermore, shelters are in "disrepair," and health services are "barely enough to address the primary needs," while restrictions on livelihood opportunities leave them "largely dependent on full rations provided by the UN."

Lucky Karim further stressed the dangerous security crisis, where "armed groups remain powerful in the camps." Compounding these is the immediate impact of massive aid cuts, which have led to healthcare facilities closing and volunteers losing the stipends that met their basic needs. She warned that these perilous conditions, combined with the crisis in Rakhine State, have forced "thousands of women and children to risk their lives by fleeing to neighbouring countries... in the hopes of a better life." Karim concluded with an urgent call to donors and host governments to ensure the basic rights and needs of the refugees are met, including formal quality education and livelihood access.

Starlink Internet Now Available in Rakhine at 2,000 MMK Per Hour

AB News – July 17, 2025
Chandara

In several townships across Rakhine, the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government has set a standardized rate of 2,000 kyats per hour for using Starlink internet services starting from July 17, according to AB News field reports. Residents have already begun accessing the service at this new rate.

Previously, users had to pay 5,000 kyats per hour for internet access. A user told AB News that from July 18 onward, the rate has dropped to just 2,000 kyats per hour.

“It used to be 5,000 kyats per hour. Now that it’s reduced to 2,000, it’s much more manageable,” the user said.

A resident of Kyauk Taw told AB News that the rate reduction has made internet access more affordable and accessible for the public, especially for communicating with family members abroad.

“Before, people had to pay 5,000 kyats for just one hour, so they often couldn’t stay in touch with family members overseas. For people who are struggling, 5,000 is a big deal. With this price drop, people can communicate with their families more easily. As a citizen, I’m really happy about this,” the resident shared.

Although internet rates have dropped, phone call rates reportedly remain unchanged — at 1,000 kyats per minute.

On the other hand, since Starlink service is still not available in all areas of Rakhine, many rural residents are still facing significant travel costs just to access internet services.

Since late 2023, due to intensifying armed conflict between the Arakan Army and the military junta, phone and internet services have been largely cut off across the region.
