Happy to share a video (finally!) of "Pushing Through Friction" from SREcon19 EMEA / Web Unleashed 2019. This is my favorite talk that I've ever delivered.
If you've ever felt frustrated at a company in the midst of enormous growth, this talk is for you.

@shadab2005 @dan_abramov @ASchreiber This blog post is a good start: https://t.co/lTzn2LJY2X
And there is a codesandbox on this guide: https://t.co/tlYD5u3DYM
@dan_abramov @ASchreiber I understand what you mean. OP was referring to a children re-rendering because the parent re-rendered. That “CSS transition on parents” idea addresses both your point and theirs so you get declarative components with animation support
@SeanJMacIsaac@ASchreiber @dan_abramov My way doesn't require any add'l JS to execute 😁 cDM can be a noop. Plus GPU acceleration is leveraged with CSS transitions. Of course YYMV and it depends on the particulars, but for, say, an accordion expand on a list? *chef kissing fingers*
@dan_abramov @ASchreiber BTW, a generic “trick” for animation is to apply transitions to parents and use the presence of children to affect various declarative CSS states. Same props.children => same component state, just an elegant transition between differences.

@dan_abramov @ASchreiber Not OP, but I assume the OP is providing the “starting” position via props and then animating the DOM via CSS. So there’s a visual transition and an internal “CSS state” via the animation.
