This report needs to go further and look at the loss of young talent leaving our country to overseas universities straight after school. The loss of potential talent and potential taxpayers is also staggering. And these young people are not returning after they have graduated.

Not only does emigration rob us of skilled talent but it also leaves a gaping hole to government’s tax revenues.

Finance Minister, Comrade Enoch Godongwana noted in a May Parliamentary session that 2,700 individuals earning over R500,000 annually, along with another 1,100 earning over R1 million, have left South Africa. 

This departure equates to a loss of R1,3 billion in tax revenue for South Africa.
