There’s a certain amount of flattery that comes with the experience of social media. And in the simplest, kindest sense of the word. The bewitching of attention. 🧵
What if young men used the senior year of high school to build a small handmade house? - A simple cabin, timber frame cottage, etc. This was normative at the beginning of our nation, but now housing has become so heavily commercialized as to be a nearly unattainable phantasm.
Homesteading isn't for everyone, but starting off your adult life with some real tangible asset like a half acre of land and a cabin would be a game changer for the young generation. These kinds of starter homesteads were built all over the frontier by young men with axes, saws, and a set of chisels. My goal for my own sons is to work with each of them to help them build a micro-homestead and simple house before they graduate highschool. What they do with it is up to them - they can dive into the homesteader life if they want, use it as a retreat/vacation/hunting cabin, rent it out, sell it, whatever. The most important thing is the experience, confidence, and know-how they can get by completing a project like that. They will carry that with them forever.
If you have a small crew of likeminded young men, you could pitch in together to build each other's micro-homesteads, or even collaborate to buy a bit more land and built something like frontier fort village, like the folks did with Kelly Station: https://t.co/Sa4jGctC0p
I know that zoning and building code nonsense can make this somewhat tricky, but it's not impossible to self-build your own natural material home; in a lot of places it's not even particularly more challenging to get something like this approved over conventional stick-built or manufactured housing, as long as some of the basic coding requirements are met. Septic systems are a big one, but most places have composting toilet alternatives in place, etc. All it would take as a replicable project is one or two guys with some skill and know-how experience and then a couple of more who can do labor and learn. That's it.
@doctorcalf It’s essentially the ozempic of boozing. Can be very effective. Anything that gives him distance from the last drink. Could say more about what I did in 14+ years of sobriety now, but honestly anything that’s just not drinking can help
