END OF AN ERA: Russia's oldest gas export route to Europe halted
For over five decades, Europe benefited from a steady flow of Russian gas via pipelines in Ukraine. That deal has now expired
While that won't trigger shortages in Europe, it does mark a historic shift
Thread🧵
Note that NMC has a harder time falling in price because of the cost of Nickel and Cobalt (I estimate $60/kWh raw material prices) while LFP only has around $12/kWh in raw material cost (mainly lithium) and sodium battery materials cost a fraction of that.
A remarkable transition:
Kenya is Africa's leading country when it comes to renewables.
In 2000 fossil fuels contributed 60% to electricity generation.
Today it is 6%. In 2023 electricity was from almost 50% geothermal, 20% wind+solar and 22% hydro.
It is with a heavy heart that I am posting this as my picture of the week but the truth is thaty Northvolt has not been able to scale up #lithiumion battery production which is not good for its investors, its customers and other stakeholders and more importantly the European #autmobile industry and the competitive positioning of European in a future where #batteries are a critical technology going forward.
Bottom line, we in Europe have lost the ability to scale up hardware production plants due to a whole host of reasons from bureaucracy to hubris to lack of knowhow…And it does not bode well for cross border and cross business cooperation which is critical for Europe’s future.
There needs to be real open dialogue about what went wrong and then we need to learn and try again.

Important new study shows that current climate models underestimate the human-caused slowing of the #AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation), because they neglect freshwater influx from Greenland melt and other sources. /1

COP29 is kicking off and the biggest issue on the agenda is climate finance.
Nearly 200 states must agree on a new goal to help developing nations tackle climate change. They disagree on nearly every issue
I've outlined key disputes & dividing lines ⬇️

Simplicity Wins
Electric motors (on the left) have fewer parts, wear out less quickly, require less repair and maintenance, have better performance, much lower CO2 generation, and are simply cheaper compared to combustion engines (on the right) and yet legacy car manufacturers don't seem to fully get this simple truth.
Paiporta, Valencia.
The world's grid-scale battery storage capacity grew by 120.8% from 2022 to 2023, which puts us on track to reach the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s target of 1300 GW of battery storage by 2030.
China now has nearly half the world's battery storage capacity, growing 249.1% from 2022-2023. The U.S. comes in second place with 28.3% of the world's capacity, which grew by 70% from the previous year.
If you want to know why #China is leading the production of all things #cleanenergy: #wind#solar, #batteries, #heatpumps, #batteries, #electrolysers, #EVs you need to look no further than this graph. #China is investing in the future and the #US is starting to do so again......But sleepy #Europe is another story. We are restructuring and closing down our industry and not investing in the future....
❗️ Seven NATO countries oppose Ukraine’s membership, according to Politico.
Leading the opposition are the US and Germany, fearing escalation with Russia. Spain, Belgium, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Hungary also stand against it.

"In the IPCC-AR6 report, the probability of an AMOC collapse is considered to be low with medium confidence. Our analysis provides a first probability estimate from reanalysis data which gives a mean tipping time estimation of 2050 with a 10 – 90% CI of 2037 – 2064"

Today, in @ScienceMagazine, we report that global CO2 #emissions from #forest fires have increased by 60%since 2001. Forest #fires have also shifted north and become more severe.
