With Marshall Weinberg support, @UMAnthro PhD student @pcontreras92 will conduct fieldwork in Mexico City this fall to research resource insecurity-- needed to generate culturally sensitive public policies addressing environmental issues in a context of rapid climate change.

Her research, funded by @WennerGrenOrg@NSF, investigated how past differences in food resources of 2 populations (foragers vs. agropastoralists) led to different #geneticadaptations in metabolism, & how they relate to chronic conditions. @PhysAnth @HumBioAssoc@AAAGenetics 👩🏾💻🧬
Catalina's research examines the role of food & diet in #humanevolution, #adaptation, and #culturalchange among contemporary populations using #evolutionary and #biocultural approaches to study how nutritional histories have shaped genetic adaptations across human populations.

Most of her work so far has been focused on finding the best way to understand differences in hair #phenotype. She is measuring traits like the radius of curls and amount of #melanin in hair, among other things, to develop good methods to quantify hair curl and color.
@emiliahsc's work includes using ancient DNA to answer questions of interbreeding with #archaic humans. She also looks at how #admixture, both recent and archaic events, shapes #geneticvariation.
