Excited to introduce CRISPRpedia-a new online textbook that covers CRISPR from its role in bacterial immunity into a tool for genome editing to applications in basic research, medicine, and agriculture. The 80+ original illustrations are free to use! https://t.co/TlQIZverPY
My article is now out in @Nature!
It’s been ~1 year since my post about the flaws within 2 high-profile articles that claimed 33-68% increases in crop yield. Our paper describes common issues & suggests yield-testing criteria for future pubs. A thread🧵

A postdoc position is available in my lab! If you have experience in microscopy, roots, microbes or high throughput anatomical phenotyping - please apply! Please RT. https://t.co/8kivA6Iq3c
“Although gaps remain in the natural hypothesis of #COVID-19’s origins, the lab-leak alternative is poorly supported and internally incoherent. The debate only continues because popular consensus is not yet ready to accept this.”

Fantastic! A synthetic microbiota composed of 48 culturable bacterial strains from the leaf endosphere of healthy Arabidopsis plants was able to substantially restore immunocompetence similar to plants inoculated with a soil-derived community.
Check out this cool paper from our lab! Congrats to all!

This is a good article about twitter and scientists. Why some are leaving, why some are not, why we are worried and ultimately why twitter doesn’t matter that much.
Thousands of scientists are cutting back on Twitter, seeding angst & uncertainty https://t.co/h1BIcBGuwf by @myriam_vidalv@Nature
Me: If experts leave, "are we just making room for a massive echo chamber that can spread misinformation in a way that is very harmful to society?"

“Just because a supplement is on the market does not mean it’s safe, effective or contains what it advertises. It is virtually impossible for the average person … to make informed decisions about purchasing supplements without outside assistance.”
Some over-the-counter sports supplements advertise ingredients with purported performance-enhancing properties, but it’s anyone’s guess what’s really in that pill or powder.

#PLOSBiology: https://t.co/jI2nBNI702 Improving photosynthesis would capture more CO2 from the atmosphere that can be sequestered in the soil. Scientists have already increased photosynthetic responses to light & manipulated photosynthetic enzymes to increase reaction rates.
#PLOSBiology: Can we manipulate the soil microbiome to promote carbon sequestration in croplands? Yes, but we are not there yet and it will not be easy. 👇👇https://t.co/Uog68PTikc
Synthetic biology- genetic engineering to introduce new capabilities into living organisms—has the potential to rapidly develop climate-resilient crops. This precise genetic control allows synthetic biologists to engineer complex traits into plants. https://t.co/ezhZsC5bDk
Climate change is associated with crop exposure to unpredictable temperatures, water levels, salinity, and elevated carbon dioxide. Due to its wide range of adaptability, of all crops, rice has the most genetic potential for adaptation to climate change. https://t.co/EorJ8ZSuqT
The urgency of ameliorating the effects of atmospheric CO2 means that we cannot afford hastily “throwing ideas to the wall and seeing what sticks.” We now have molecular tools to adddress key knowledge gaps for engineering soil carbon sequestration . https://t.co/OOh4OtB4Vy
