Van Gogh was a realist: he always started from what he saw in reality, even when he exaggerated, changed, or simplified colours and forms. He wanted everyone to be able to understand his work, without having to explain much.

Vincent wrote to his brother Theo:
I’ve done my best, brother, to ensure that you can see (and not just you, but everyone with eyes in his head) that I strive and sometimes manage to tackle things practically.

In 1841, American painter John Goffe Rand invented the collapsible paint tube, which kept colors fresh outdoors.

By the 1880s, Van Gogh relied on them to work in fields and streets, making plein-air painting central to his style. #artbots #vangogh
