@andrew_lilico I agree. The fact that people who do hard grafting jobs on building sites and earn more than you or me, doesn’t strike me as unfair. One day this could include carers, baristas etc, likewise.
A labour guy wrote a book “head heart and hand.” Heart and hand will mean more.
@andrew_lilico I imagine it’s more that it was simply viewed as poor by those who believe in god, and not so by those who don’t. I’ve never felt the need to read it.
@andrew_lilico Wow. Whilst that might seem a bit naff and dated to some, and Americanised, I think that’s better than Suella which sounded more posh / parent with ideas above their station.
@andrew_lilico Yes. This is my view. And is a method I’ve used to judge between various Tory and Labour leaders over the past few parliaments. Starmer, Cameron, Johnson didn’t believe in much. Corbyn, Miliband, truss did and were arguably worse. But generally I prefer more change.
@Krytoned@afneil But that’s the point. The progress made since 1978 is because that’s approximately when they embraced capitalism as opposed to communism! Deng xiaoping! “I care not if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.” The capitalist cat caught many more.
@afneil Full agreed on the double diss. I once worked for a fun, profitable, startup. We used other things such as slack. Once we got bigger and more corporate, we switched to teams and it was a clear sign we had lost our way. Left the disruptors and joined the stale rent seekers.
@andrew_lilico Or to put it another way, I want to live in a right wing country where I don’t need deposit insurance, but seeing as I don’t, and it was too late in 2008 to do anything else, I believed in
Deposit insurance at that time but not bank bailouts
@andrew_lilico What if I was anti deposit insurance when it was introduced but, given that it was, and had been going for so many years, didn’t feel I should lose savings at that point?
@bealelab Your writings have been very persuasive on this, speaking as someone who had some thoughts on either side of this debate but didn’t come in to this with a settled view
@MarkFaulknerUK@silasdenyer There was a time when it was somewhat defensible. That time has long since passed. Even those who love the nhs or the concept have lost faith in it but some blame underfunding. We need 5 years of labour giving it massive funding to prove its fucked.
@andrew_lilico So people who work, earn, save and pay tax should be penalised for their social care. But people on benefits or those who blew their earnings on holidays, nice cars etc, should have their care provided for them by those same taxpayers?! And you call yourself right wing?!
@afneil I’m anti EU. And I’ve heard some brexiteers and right wingers claim the EU or the eurozone would collapse. These idiots are in every political movement, the ones who think wishful thinking can make the EU collapse or Putin get sick etc.
But Andrew was never one of them.
@DannyVet@afneil The world has moved on mate. Reagan and thatchers hard right wing policies delivered peace, safety, economic growth and wealth. Major, Clinton and Blair largely had the sense to preserve all that. Everyone since has squandered it. World has moved on. Dangerous and poor again. /1
@RogerPatt1000@afneil Not sure about the renewables anytime soon but the oil industry does seem to be sending a message “replace us with nuclear asap please”
