Cold-calling/ asking students questions they might not be able to answer, is one of the oldest, most common things a teacher can do. People getting upset about that are treating children like delicate China. They will not break. Once children get used to it, and the atmosphere celebrates making an attempt, it becomes entirely normal. Stop impeding their growth as human beings.

Ways to build relationships w/students that do not involve SM.
1. Attend school functions.
2. Do hall duty.
3. Sponsor a club.
4. Sit at lunch w/them once a week.
5. Do recess duty.
6. Find out what they are reading and keep the titles in your classroom library.

Feedback is the shining light for students to know how well they have learnt knowledge taught and applied it to different contexts.
