📌 Iran’s Foreign Ministry holds U.S. directly responsible for Israeli ceasefire violations in Lebanon

Iran’s Foreign Ministry issued a formal statement Monday holding the United States directly responsible for both its own ceasefire violations against Iran and for Israel’s military escalation in Lebanon, which it described as “flagrant violations” of the April 8 ceasefire agreement.

The statement said Israel’s operations in Lebanon have killed and wounded thousands, displaced two million people, and destroyed civilian infrastructure — and that “a violation of the ceasefire on any front constitutes a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts.”

Iran accused the U.S. of continued interference with and attacks on Iranian commercial shipping since the ceasefire, and said that despite Washington’s stated efforts in the early days after April 8 to restrain Israel, American responsibility for the current escalation is “clear.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran possesses both the capability and the determination to make use of all available means, based on its inherent right of self-defense, to protect its interests wherever it deems necessary,” the statement warned.

Iranian-American analyst Negar Mortazavi tells Jeremy Scahill that the Trump administration entered the war believing Iran would collapse quickly, but instead ran into a country prepared for “horizontal escalation” across the region and global energy markets.

“Iran hasn't done anything that they didn't promise or threaten to do,” Mortazavi says, arguing Gulf states warned Washington before the war that any attack on Iran would spill across the region.

She also says the U.S. repeatedly shifted the goalposts in negotiations, moving from preventing nuclear weapons to demanding “zero enrichment,” which Iran sees as an attempt to dismantle its civilian nuclear program entirely.

“They're not going to surrender. They're not going to capitulate,” Mortazavi says.
