Robert Elliot, a Black man, was reportedly found burned and wrapped in a tarp, with the condition of his remains making identification take months.

And yet, when Black people die under suspicious or disturbing circumstances, too often the first public narrative seems to arrive before all the questions have been answered.

We deserve answers. We deserve transparency. We deserve a thorough investigation.

If this was not suicide, then the truth must be uncovered. And if investigators have evidence supporting their conclusion, the public deserves to understand that evidence.

Over the past 25 years, there have been over 70 cases in the United States of African-Americans being found hanging in public places, which were swiftly ruled as su*cides by local law enforcement. This pattern saw a curious uptick between March 2025 and August 2026, coinciding with the current tenure of US President Donald Trump, who may easily be considered the most openly racist, anti-African and corrupt US leader of the last two centuries (emphasis on “openly”).

These chilling cases echo the historical lynchings of African-Americans throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Another Black man, 38-year-old Demetrius Fleming, has been found dead in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, in what police describe as an apparent hanging.

His death comes just days after another Black man was found hanging from a tree in Raleigh.

Police say Fleming was connected to a ligature and that the case remains an open, equivocal death investigation. They have not ruled out suicide or foul play.

Given America’s history, these cases demand thorough investigations, transparency and answers—not assumptions.
