“Since hearing loss is not as noticeable as blindness or physical pain, I thought it’d be a difficult thing to express in acting outside the context of the situation. This was a scene where I was amazed by the vividness of the perplexity and fear from not being able to hear, just through actor Jinyoung’s eyes and facial expressions.

In the following scenes, how he could make such a painful face, I again worried whether he was actually in poor condition. I felt this again, but actor Jinyoung is truly a master of acting in pain.”

The two face each other. Miji’s face is covered in tears. Hosu gently wipes them away.

Hosu (Narration): A path where you can’t see even an inch ahead… a decision to walk it together.

Over the image of Miji and Hosu gazing at each other with longing.

Hosu (Narration): Even if the ending we face is nothing but shabby… until the very end, [we keep moving] forward.

When writing this scene, we kept going back and forth with the director about whether or not to end it with a kiss. The director said, for now, he’d leave the kiss out of the script and decide on set, seeing whether the actors’ emotions rose that far. So I kept wondering all along what happened – did their emotions really rise to that point? Eventually, at the wrap party, I cautiously asked actor Jinyoung, ‘By the way, how did the ending of episode 11 turn out? Did your emotions go as far as kissing?’ Then actor Jinyoung explained in such delicate detail Hosu’s overwhelming feelings in that moment. Listening to him, I couldn’t hold back and asked again, ‘So, did you kiss then?’ and suddenly I turned into someone crazy about the kiss. (For reference, according to actor Jinyoung, the director had apparently nailed it down from the start, even before filming: ‘The last moment will be a kiss.’ …)
