Today, almost 14 years after I last sat a written examination, and more than 25 years since I last studied mathematics at A-Level, I found myself facing a question that required me to formulate and solve a quadratic equation.
The paper was entirely multiple-choice.
I first encountered quadratic equations nearly 30 years ago, probably in Senior Two or Senior Three. I remember learning at least three methods of solving them. By Senior Three, I had even mastered the derivation of the general quadratic formula itself. It was—and perhaps still is—the most recognisable formula in O-Level mathematics.
Ironically, it is the only method I still remember.
Or so I thought.
Today, when I needed it most, I tried repeatedly to recall the formula. Each attempt ended at the very first hurdle. It simply wouldn't come. Eventually, I skipped the question and completed the other 89.
When I returned to it, the formula was still nowhere to be found.
So I did what mathematics had taught me decades ago: I went back to first principles.
I wrote down the general quadratic equation, ax^2 + bx + c = 0, and began deriving the solution from scratch. To my surprise, it was far easier to reconstruct the formula than to retrieve it from memory. A few minutes later, I had my answer and selected the closest option provided.
The experience left me reflecting on a much bigger question.
We are entering an age where AI can instantly retrieve formulas, solve equations, write code, and answer questions that once demanded years of study and memorisation. As that reality changes the incentives to commit knowledge to memory, what should education really be testing?
Perhaps the value of education will lie less in recalling information and more in understanding the principles that generate it. After all, when memory failed me today, understanding did not.
Maybe that is the lesson.
And perhaps examinations, too, will have to evolve—not to compete with AI, but to assess the uniquely human abilities that remain indispensable: reasoning, judgment, creativity, and the capacity to derive solutions when the answers are no longer sitting in memory.
