@tomflood1 My son volunteered as a crossing guard at his school. They were trained by a police officer, I'm told. When kids and cars are both present, they stop the pedestrians and wave the cars through and only raise their neon STOP signs when drivers won't be delayed.

@kelownacycler @JordanRossMedia @mec I'm a big fan of the Showers Pass. The waterproof membrane broke down on the base of my fingers after a few years, but they're still my faves. Vessi (disclosure: my wife works there) has something similar that I'm curious to try.

@JordanRossMedia I have a pair of knit wool gloves from Showers Pass that are (were) waterproof that I wear a ton when it's not REALLY cold. Otherwise I have some gloves from Gore that are water/wind proof and insulated but are pretty bulky.

@efacc I think the worst thing I have ever done is played music on my phone at full volume on a bus not knowing my bluetooth headphones had died and it was just blaring tinny noise into the whole bus.

@pfak Fair enough. I use my credit card A LOT, but occasionally, in a small business where I know margins are tight, I'll deliberately use debit. Does the owner notice or care? I don't know. I do it for me because I want that business to succeed.

@pfak If the fee is 2.4% and the margin is 10%, that's 24% of their margin. That sort of margin is not unheard of on some goods, particularly if they are discounted.

@pfak I'm fine with it. For small margin items, the difference b/w someone paying cash or debit and a premium credit card could be 10-25% of their margin. Rather than $ go to the business (esp. small business) than to VISA.

@literaryeric We didn't do gifts at our kids' parties for years. We didn't see how having a dozen new toys was going to make the day better, in part because our home is small. Now that they are inviting fewer close friends (3-4), we've stopped the 'no gifts' request.
