While #peace is seen as a foreign policy issue in the US, our research shows that US communities, especially those struggling with high levels of crime and violence, do care about peace. They just tend to use words like “safety” and "well-being” instead.

Building safety in the U.S. is more akin to building peace internationally than many Americans may think. As we call for world peace, we think people should remember that these conversations matter here at home, too.

Just like we know that #peace is more than the absence of war, these communities see safety as more than fighting crime. For them, safety is about reducing violence, enhancing social trust, creating economic opportunity, strengthening intergenerational relations and so much more.
It’s the #InternationalDayOfPeace! 🕊️ But do Americans really care about #peace? ☮️
Our research shows they do, it just depends on how you ask. Find out more👇

Happy to see the "first view" publication of my article "Justice in the Vernacular: An Anthropological Critique of Commensuration" in Law & Social Inquiry. Many thanks to @Pfirchow and @pedrodixon for organizing this special issue in honor of Sally Engle Merry. @LSI_Journal
Equally those who are taking too long! Reminding them to save and close the forms upon completion helps us get an accurate picture of how long the surveys are really taking.
Teams @everydaypeace Colombia are in the field carrying out @kobotoolbox based digital surveys on coexistence and justice using community-based indicators.
One of the values of digital surveys is the instant quality control. Here you can see different durations on day one of a survey that should take ~25 minutes. But some people are clearly rushing, giving our team an opportunity to ask why and figure out strategies to help them.
This World Bank report is striking both for its content on pandemic-related inequality and for its data visualization to illustrate that inequality.

3️⃣CRIMINALIZE & PROSECUTE GRAVE INTERNATIONAL CRIMES DOMESTICALLY
Governments should pass laws that make international crimes domestic offenses & enable prosecutions on the basis of #UniversalJurisdiction

#Doublestandards in the application of justice efforts for serious crimes will undermine the credibility & effectiveness of accountability efforts for serious crimes.
We need consistency.

4️⃣GIVE ALL VICTIMS OF GRAVE INTERNATIONAL CRIMES EQUAL ACCESS TO JUSTICE
Governments should pursue and support justice for grave crimes, regardless of where they take place.
#InternationalJusticeDay#JusticeMatters#NGOVoices
📢 Before #InternationalJusticeDay (July 17), we are asking governments to build on the unprecedented support they have shown to address crimes in #Ukraine.
They should now take concrete steps to strengthen the international justice system worldwide.
