Whatever challenges you face this week, remember that God’s sustaining grace is your ultimate resource. Stay in the race. His grace is sufficient, His power is perfected in your weakness.
One reason I refuse to livestream our worship services (the sermon goes on YouTube Monday or Tuesday) is because I want the fear of missing out to be real. If you weren’t there, then you missed something. You did not worship with your congregation. You missed out on that.
Now I know the question: what about the shut-ins and the elderly who truly can’t make it?
First, widespread livestreaming of worship services is a brand-new development. For almost all of church history, it simply didn’t exist.
Second, the sermon will still be available online, and the elders should be regularly visiting shut-ins for prayer and, where appropriate, the Lord’s Supper in person.
Third, the number of excuses people make for staying home has exploded. Everyone seems to have a “medical reason” they can’t gather. Yet if most people missed work as often as they miss public worship, they would soon be out of a job.
I’m not interested in encouraging that mindset. Public worship is gathered worship. That’s what I want to encourage.
Martin Luther wrote the hymn, “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word.”
The original subtitle was, “A Children’s Hymn, to be Sung Against the Two Archenemies of Christ and His Holy Church, the Pope and Turk.”
Given the state of things today, it's time to dust this one off👇🏻
1. Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word;
curb those who by deceit or sword
would seek to overthrow your Son
and to destroy what he has done.
2. Lord Jesus Christ, your pow'r make known,
for you are Lord of lords alone;
defend your Christendom that we
may sing your praise eternally.
3. O Comforter of priceless worth,
send peace and unity on earth;
support us in our final strife
and lead us out of death to life.
Can’t believe I’m saying this but… I miss @SpiritAirlines. I would take them every time to Richmond and never had any issues. Had to take @JetBlue this time and they are 0-2 with me. Constantly delayed by almost an hour, unfriendly staff, just an all around terrible experience.
Won't he do it? We are grateful for the Lord's kindness to us this week, the faithfulness of our speakers to declare the words of God, the joy of hundreds of men worshiping in unison, and for everyone who made it out to Churchman. Safe travels to all and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
Dr. @hbcharlesjr closed out night one with an insightful and encouraging word from Titus 3:12-15 to demonstrate that all of God's word is profitable and full of grace to us in Christ.
As we kick off day 2 of Churchman, we want to highlight a special moment last night where Dr. @hbcharlesjr was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Grimké Seminary. Dr. Charles is well deserving of this honor for his tireless work at Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville, FL where he serves as their Pastor-Teacher, his founding of Cutting It Straight ministries and conference through which he has faithfully trained a new generation of preachers in Christ-Centered, Expositional Preaching, his example as a husband and father to his wife Crystal and their three children, and above all his love and fidelity to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We are grateful to call Dr. Charles a brother and a friend and pray for many more years of fruitful labor in the Lord.
Boys do not need more pizza, silly games, and “cool” youth pastors. They need demanding challenges, serious theology, strong men, and fathers willing to stop outsourcing their formation to unimpressive men. Your son may not be the problem. His youth group might be.
"Those who are most relevant to the modern world are those most irrelevant to the moral purpose of God, but those who are irrelevant in the world by virtue of their relevance to God actually have the most to say to the world.” -David Wells
Absolute loving my time at @grimkeseminary’s men’s conference. Second year in and it’s been absolutely fantastic so far. So thankful to be able to come to Richmond and be part of this amazing conference. #Churchman
