"Austerity has led to a sense of hopelessness for millions of people. The media does everything it can to place the blame for all of society's problems on the poorest & most vulnerable. It's within this context that the far right can flourish" - Ken Loach @NoPasaranLondon 2March

More cuts in Gateshead 😡
On Tuesday, Gateshead Council launched a consultation with staff and unions over its plans to cut jobs and make "efficiencies" in a bid to cut £10.6m from its costs:

Last year Labour suspended 7 MPs for six months for voting against the two-child benefit cap.

Lifting the cap should be seen as a massive win for anti-poverty campaigners. Labour didn't scrap it out of kindness-they were pushed.

JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE ALLIANCE OF NHS CAMPAIGNS
The Autumn Budget is a massive disappointment to all those who desperately wanted Labour to demonstrate that it is on the side of ordinary people and committed to restoring the NHS.

Thank you to the activists who came out on the eve of the Budget determined to build a working class fight back on the cost of living crisis - and to build a mass movement for public ownership, peace, and wealth redistribution in Britain.

“In our union we say this: ‘If there is money for supersonic missiles, there is money for school support staff’”
@NEUnion General Secretary Daniel Kebede making the case for #WelfareNotWarfare at last night’s Eve of Budget demonstration.

“We are not going to accept that they are going to spend money on bombs. We want it spent on children’s books. We want it spent on the school estate. We want it spent on alleviating the crushing burden of school poverty. And if they don’t, we’re going to fight them.”

EVE OF THE BUDGET PROTEST

📆 25 November, 6PM
📍Downing Street

Join @zarahsultana , trade unionists, and activists as we demand a People’s Budget and an end to austerity.
Millions who voted Labour now see a government eroding the NHS and public services while refusing to confront employers who are driving the cost of living crisis.

This budget looks set to deepen the assault on working class people through stealth taxes and further cuts. We demand #WelfareNotWarfare and to #MakeTheRichPay

Join us at Downing Street on Tuesday night as we organise for an economy and a politics for the many and not the billionaire class.

The Great British Railways is a step in the right direction but this government promised the biggest wave of insourcing in a generation.
Rail cleaners, gate line staff, revenue teams, dispatchers, catering and security staff are being exploited by companies like @carlislesupserv and the government needs to put its money where its mouth is to stop it.
They have the power to #EndOutsourcing and the siphoning of public funds to private companies with huge executive pay and interest payments sent overseas.

The government also needs to protect transport workers from losing their UK visas status.

There’s no magic money tree for public services but the government can find money to buy 12 nuclear-capable F-35A jets from Donald Trump.

Real security comes in the form of a fully funded, publicly owned NHS, social housing, tuition free education and meaningful action on climate change.

Join the demonstration on Tuesday and demand a People’s’ Budget that invests in our communities and not weapons of mass destruction.

Our education system is in crisis. Austerity has resulted in years of real terms pay cuts for teachers.

Meanwhile teacher supply agencies are profiting from public funds and exploiting the workforce with pay below national pay scales.

There’s money to invest in military spending and war but 74% of schools have less funding since 2010.

Join the protest for a People’s Budget on Tuesday!

Every extra pound poured into warfare is a pound stripped from welfare and the services that keep us alive and dignified; we should be clear: we demand welfare, not warfare.

Plans to increase military spending to 3.5% of GDP is the equivalent of £500 per person per year.

This could be invested in social care, housing, education and healthcare - not new weapons programmes and wars.
