My dad grew up in one of the most rural parts of NC. Thanks to the Duke Talent Identification Program, which ran a talent search across the rural South to find and uplift smart American kids, he was thrown an intellectual life preserver. He then double majored in math and CS, and went on to get his finance PhD.

That program doesn’t exist anymore.

Now, when a top university wants stem talent, they import it en masse from Asia, and fasttrack those immigrants to high paying US jobs. How many brilliant rural kids are out there now (in the “flyover states” @agupta smeared) waiting for a life preserver that never comes? Neglecting American STEM talent was one of our most egregious errors.

Rooting for Hollywood to die is loserthink. The antidote for the woke fever dream that ruined movies for the last few years isn’t to just abandon and destroy film culture entirely…the answer is breaking the fever. Obsession, Project Hail Mary, Top Gun: Maverick…there have been some bangers emerging from the ashes that actually are winning big at the box office again. They don’t have an agenda, and are entertaining as hell. Their insane box office returns should remind all of us that not only is Hollywood still a highly valuable industry, but deep down, we ALL still want to go to the movies. We just want it to be like the good old days in the 90s when movies were just movies, not a UC Santa Cruz lecture.

Culture is America’s #1 global export, and Hollywood is the vanguard for popular culture. Period. Not only is it worth saving, it’s necessary. Not just for California, but for the entire country. We cannot root for California to fail…the success of our country relies on a strong, prosperous, and sane California. We need to nurture this place the way we’d nurture a family member going through a drug crisis. Stern, stable leadership, a full intervention to purge the addiction (to wokeness), and a committed effort to rehabilitate her.

I see people on the right saying "screw Hollywood" like they're scorned ex-girlfriends. And I see people on the left saying "screw the film tax credit" simply because it involves the President. All of you need to grow the fuck up. We are saving America, and that includes California. And California...that includes the President. Get on board or get out, losers.

“Your God CRIED?”

I used to say it with a little laugh. “If Jesus was God, why did He weep like a weak man?”

I mocked the shortest verse in the Bible. Years later it brought me to my knees.

“Jesus wept.” John 11:35. Two words. It should bring you to your knees.

Then I actually read WHERE He’s standing. At the tomb of His friend Lazarus. And here’s the part that undoes me: He’s about to raise him. In sixty seconds He’ll shout that dead man back to life. The victory is already loaded.

And He weeps ANYWAY.

He didn’t have to. The happy ending was already in His hand. But He looked at the grief around Him, the sisters, the mourners, the sheer wreckage that death makes of everything, and He entered it.

He let it hit Him. God, with tears running down His face, at the graveside of someone He loved.

The God of Islam was too majestic to weep. I was proud of that. Until I met a God who was strong enough to.

“We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses.” Hebrews 4:15.

Whatever you’re burying right now. He’s not watching from a safe distance.

He’s the God who weeps at gravesides.

And then empties them. For all eternity.

We need a bit more shame.

People used to avoid certain self-interested behaviors to avoid shame, private and public. Law and customs assumed this.

Now, 38% of Stanford students claim to be disabled. 40% of young women (under 35) claim mental illness, and SSI disability payments have gone up 400% in a single generation.

It isn't good for anyone, least of all people who are actually disabled, when everyone looks the other way as friends and family and peers con the system with a level of shamelessness no architect of our safety net ever imagined could be possible in America. When everyone is disabled, nobody is.

The war on beauty is a war on the human spirit.

Beauty gives people order, dignity, memory, and hope. Remove it from homes, schools, streets, art, architecture, and language, and people slowly begin to expect less from life.

Some fuel it for profit because cheap buildings, cheap culture, and cheap entertainment scale faster.

Others fuel it through ideology because inherited beauty carries standards they want to break.

A people surrounded by ugliness become easier to distract, depress, and control.
