Originally this was a sell signal: when the distance is too low, upside is capped. Flip the rule and treat a 1-standard-deviation high reading as the trigger, and it becomes a useful buy signal, with a caveat: the distance also widens during selloffs.

Overlaying a positive weekly MACD filters those periods out. With that filter, the signal has been surprisingly effective.
