On The Daily Signal, historian Victor Davis Hanson (@VDHanson) traced today's “𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘥 𝘨𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵” complaints straight back to an attorney general Democrats never wanted you to scrutinize.

The receipts back him up. In 2013, Holder's Justice Department secretly seized 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬 from 20 different lines during a leak hunt. In a separate case, Holder personally approved labeling Fox News reporter James Rosen a potential “𝘢𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳, 𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥/𝘰𝘳 𝘤𝘰-𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳” just to get a warrant for his personal emails and phone records.

That's not a talk-radio exaggeration—it's the Justice Department's own court filings, confirmed by NBC News and the AP itself at the time.

VDH's larger point: the DOJ's politicized playbook didn't start with Trump-era controversies. It started with an attorney general who bragged about being 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐦𝐚𝐧 and moved the whole department left before anyone dared call it weaponization.

— The Washington bureau chiefs of ABC, CBS, CNN & NBC said they wouldn't interview Feinberg if Fox was shut out, noting it broke pool rules. The administration relented.

— This came amid the broader feud, with Anita Dunn saying "we're not going to legitimize them as a news organization."

— At the time, Treasury called it "much ado about absolutely nothing" & denied any plot.

— In 2011, Judicial Watch FOIA'd emails showing otherwise: White House broadcast media director Dag Vega wrote Treasury that they'd prefer Fox be skipped, & Josh Earnest wrote that they'd shown their willingness & ability to exclude Fox from significant interviews. @jrpsaki called Bret Baier a "lunatic" & joked about putting dead fish in the Fox cubby.

He also spent most of his presidency complaining about Fox News, saying they're bad for the country, likening them to terrorists, etc.
