Three things that just might be related:
* the rise of identitarian deference politics
* cultural expansion of the concept of "disability"
* the fact that disability is the only plausible basis for political deference that can be invoked by professional class white people
@thefurlinator Are they just planning on popping it down on the desk of the person interviewing them??? and letting the condensation run all over this person’s stuff?? because you know they’re talking about a plastic cup with a straw squeaking away with ice clattering. are they insane?
@mattyglesias You’re ignorant. I hate guns, but they’re here and they’re not going anywhere. The fact that in a lot of states a person can have a private arsenal as long as they filled out the proper forms and don’t have a felony conviction is absurd.
@adamjohnsonCHI I don’t know, maybe validation of their long-standing beliefs or something? And I remember saying this isn’t good. That means that he thinks the Democrats are willing to do what he wants and the things he wants are bad.
@adamjohnsonCHI I think the worst of this has passed (at least based on my own parents and the older liberals I know), but back in the day it was intoxicating to them for someone like Joe Scarborough to announce that he wasn’t a registered republican anymore.
@Blizzard_Advsry@BigMeanInternet I’m not justifying prison abolition. I didn’t say anything about that. My point is that this knee-jerk anti-abolition stance is frequently espoused by people who are not well-versed in the studies and data of what prison and incarceration actually means in our country today.
@KaijuSurprise@conor64@BigMeanInternet My point is that making sweeping policy decisions based on a minute percentage of the overall incarcerated population is stupid. I didn’t say anything about whether or not an actual “serial rapist” deserves to go to prison.
@Blizzard_Advsry@conor64@BigMeanInternet I’m sorry and I hate to just screenshot an AI search result, but do you know anything about recidivism rates for all crimes? That’s crazy low compared to other crimes.
@conor64@BigMeanInternet How many people currently locked up in prison do you think are “serial rapists?” How frequently do you think people go to prison for things like that?
@sympatheticopp I thought it was an interesting observation and wanted to follow up. My grandmother and her two sisters were all given last names as middle names.
