@mmasnick@elonmusk Agree “paid social” is challenging and no guarantee it works for Twitter. Disagree that it is doomed to failure. Lots of examples of paid social working: dating apps, Meetup, online classes, Discord, Twitch, some games, conference businesses, social clubs, OnlyFans, even the NYT!
@mmasnick Good summary of what platforms have tried but doesn’t describe what @elonmusk is attempting. His plan seems to be pushing as many users as possible to paid, verified subscriptions, by jamming ads and suppressing visibility for free accounts. “Paid social” is easier to moderate.
