In the Dáil today I raised the worsening crisis in the Cork primary care psychology services.

Caused by years of severe under-resourcing & compounded by ongoing recruitment restrictions.

The answer is an extensive recruitment drive, not 'robbing Peter to pay Paul' redeployment.

@galavpsychology @MITUKteam From a neuroaffirming standpoint, a diagnosis recognises that development is taking a different trajectory, not a lesser one or a shortened one. Clinically, all of the other factors are accounted for in a thorough assessment.

@galavpsychology @MITUKteam I disagree with the assertion in this article and its not in keeping with current language preferred by the Autistic community. They reference children not being given enough time to meet their potential but autism diagnosis is not a cap or limitation on someone’s development.

Dear GPs,

If an autistic person is self harming , hearing voices or having ideation of suicide, please understand that is NOT autism.

Understand the person needs timely help, not a vague hand wave and the “it’s just autism”.

Trust me, do some training with autistic people.

@meljwiseman @psychpolis Hi Mel, I agree- so important for SLT, OT colleagues etc to have access to key training like ADOS for example. I am more wondering was there an instance here where someone without the appropriate training and qualifications purchased assessment materials etc.

@teamsquarepeg Thank you for sharing this. The use of a "calm space" destroyed my child. There was nothing calm about being locked alone in a 6ft by 4ft empty storeroom with no access to a toilet, food or water. In 2018 we started the #RemoveTheRoom and #StandardiseSafeSpaces campaigns.
