In 1683 the Polish Astronomer gave a diamond-shaped pattern of stars in the rich Milky Way field near Sagittarius and Aquila the name Scutum Sobiescianum, "Sobieski's Shield" in Latin form.

Today is September 12th, the anniversary of the Battle of Vienna. On that day, Polish-Lithuanian forces attacked the Ottomans besieging Vienna, causing a turning point in the long war between the Ottomans and the Holy Roman Empire.

A relatively small, skilled, and determined force broke the Muslim empire's invasion of Europe on this day in 1683.

Celebrate it, and if possible, go out to look at the sky to see the constellation named to commemorate the event.
