@AmyTingstrom Adobe Photoshop so prevalent in society that “photoshop” has become a generic trademark and even a common verb. Important to bring to kids’ attention that something people take for granted is also tech with trade-off & limitations. Many may not realize there is any other choice.

2/2 Don’t let tracking on program be only measurement of progress. Limits. Working w/ teacher assesses more than just right & wrong. Encourages students by acknowledging progress. Per Reclaiming Conversation don’t let kids only find value as reader from level achieved on program.

Consider NOT when using tech to help struggling readers. Trade-offs & limitations. Programs available to work on phonemic awareness & phonics, but don’t trade necessary teacher guidance & encouragement. Balance the two where appropriate to create proficient readers. 1/2 #ed109

@Ms_Millar_ Can’t believe anybody would question the relationship. Any invention has the possibility to help or harm society. Why is computer science any different? I think relationship more obvious in tech than other areas b/c it holds so much power over what people do & how they think.

@callmeMsGeo No microwave? I reheat my coffee probably three times during one cup. I have to agree that the trade-off is worth it in this case for me. Of course, I’m not worried about nutrient breakdown in this case.

@Cheyenn31241966 Me, too. I got into a car without a back up camera recently, and I noticed it immediately. I think I literally felt a moment of shock when there was no screen showing me what was behind me.

@KaliMoran14 Great one to bring up. I don’t trust those applications, but I grew up w/an English teacher. Drawback is also that user doesn’t have to understand grammar rules. In age where people truncate sentences in order to text or tweet, fear grammar being lost. Hate shorten ideas to fit.

Use Fitbit to track steps & log food religiously. Was concerned about app knowing everything about habits, but for me this is necessity. Best way found to balance history of weight/eating issues. Digital footprint worth mental health. Only as accurate as food logging. #NOT #ed109

Light bulb moment! Field trip before studying the unit is more beneficial because it links to the concrete. Wish I had read that many years ago when my kids were still young. Definitely will keep that in mind when I’m an elementary teacher. #ed109 #CLT

Finally my tendency toward printing vs reading online is said to be more beneficial! I much prefer to highlight & write notes on paper. Also agree with being able to have an actual print copy of a book to reference. I have done that twice during this weeks’ readings. #ed109 #CLT

Book I read last semester “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning” talks about people who compete in world memory championships. They utilize mnemonic devices to hold more information in their working memory.

Leveraging working memory interesting. Combining many things into one based on prior knowledge like remembering 6 letters because they form a word vs 6 random. Seems like I could purposefully use this in studying. Interested to see if I can expand working memory. #ed109 #CLT

@NicoleG14463958 Me, too! I much prefer an actual book. Don’t like electronic textbooks. I also print articles for classes so I can highlight and write thoughts. The availability of electronic reading materials is a pro, but lack of a hard copy can be a con for me. Fortunately, often resolvable.
