The month of June is dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ. The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is celebrated this year on June 12.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus originated from Christ Himself, as His heart was pierced during the crucifixion. The Preface for the Mass of the Sacred Heart proclaims, “He poured out blood and water from His pierced side, the wellspring of the Church’s Sacraments.” With that particular focus on His suffering heart, later saints such as St. Lutgarde, a Cistercian, d. 1246; St. Matilda, a Benedictine, d. 1298; and St. Gertrude, a Benedictine, d. 1302, each contributed to furthering the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

However, it was St. Margaret Mary Alacoque who is principally responsible for spreading our modern-day devotion. Over a period of 18 months, from 1673 to 1675, Our Lord appeared to her and requested that He be honored under the image of His Sacred Heart. How were people to show honor to His heart? First, by consecrating themselves to His heart, followed by acts of reparation, little sacrifices (similar to the request at Fatima), and then a devotion to His human, wounded, Sacred Heart through the practice of the First Friday devotion (receiving Holy Communion, Confession, and spending an hour before the Blessed Sacrament), and praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart.

Our Lord made 12 promises to those who fulfill the First Friday devotion. These promises include graces, peace, consolation from troubles, blessings, mercy, growth in faith, and an increase in holiness. Of particular importance is that those “who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my heart.” In addition, those who receive Communion on the first Fridays, for nine consecutive months will have the grace of final repentance: they will not die without receiving the sacraments. And, the 10th promise is directed toward priests: “I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.”

The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a traditional Catholic prayer that invokes the various attributes and mysteries of the Heart of Jesus, seeking His mercy. It is one of the approved litanies of the Church, enriched with a partial indulgence.

This litany dates back to the 17th century and was formally approved for public use by Pope Leo XIII in 1899. It consists of 33 invocations to the Sacred Heart, corresponding to the 33 years of Christ’s earthly life. It is often recited during June, the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart, or on the Feast of the Sacred Heart (this year occurring on June 12).

JUST IN: The Coptic Orthodox Church has resumed dialogue with the Holy See after Leo XIV reassured Pope Tawadros II that same-sex couples would not be blessed.

The Copts broke dialogue in March 2024 citing Fiducia Supplicans.

They write today:“The members of the Holy Synod decided to resume theological dialogue with the Catholic Church following the assurances regarding the non-blessing of same-sex couples, which were expressed during the telephone conversation between His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on Friday, May 15 of this year.��

"Blessed Dominic returned to pray in the place he had stood before. Suddenly he was caught up in spirit before God and saw the Lord and the Blessed Virgin sitting at his right. It seemed to Blessed Dominic that Our Lady was wearing a cloak the colour of sapphire.
As Blessed Dominic looked around, he could see religious of all the orders but his own before the throne of God. He began to weep bitterly and stood apart, not daring to approach the Lord and his Mother. Then Our Lady motioned for him to come near; but he would not dare until the Lord himself also called him. Blessed Dominic cast himself down before them, weeping bitterly. The Lord told him to rise, and when he did, asked him, ‘Why are you weeping so?’ ‘I am weeping because I see all the other orders here but no sign of my own.’ The Lord said to him, ‘Do you want to see your Order?’ And he answered, ‘Yes, Lord.’ Then the Blessed Virgin opened the cloak she was wearing and spread it out before Blessed Dominic, to whom it seemed vast enough to cover the entire heaven, and under it he saw a large multitude of the brethren.
